My Grand Idea!!

So, the other day I went to yet another job interview and I ended up coming up with a brilliant plan.  I have decided that I need to face the facts and acknowledge that as hard as I try, I am not going to be able to get a career in advertising like I had hoped for.  This has taken a long time to accept because I'm not someone who ever gives up on goals or dreams.  However, being in Seattle and having already interviewed at almost every agency I can find out here and not getting a single job offer, I guess it just isn't the right place or the right time.

Anyway, I was interviewing to be a front desk receptionist at a medical clinic and the owner said she was really interested in hiring me because I had an advertising/marketing background.  She asked if I could do things like make brochures for the office, write up text for a website and a few other things.  Those things were definitely things my graphic design knowledge would allow me to do.  When she mentioned what she would plan to pay me, it was quite a bit less than what I think Eric and I will need to survive and I told her a ballpark about what I was hoping for.  She offered that once she got to know me and had seen my portfolio and some of the work I had experience with, that maybe she would consider paying me on the side for the advertising work I did.  So, it would kind of be like two jobs in one.

That triggered my grand idea...what if there were a lot of offices that would consider using my services for brochures and other small advertising/marketing projects.  I still have a lot to look into, like the legality of it, how to figure out a price to charge them, how to sell my services, if there is even a large enough base of businesses to go to and start making examples.  Anyway, it is kind of exciting.  One good thing is that it would be a good side job to help me make the amount of money I am hoping too.  It also, would be a way for me to still get experience working in Advertising.  And if it seems to work out, it could turn into a working from home type of job.

If anyone reads this and has any input, please let me know!  I would love to hear your thoughts!

First of all, good to see you back in the blogging world! Second, your idea sounds really cool and interesting. Based on what you said I thought about how many medical offices or dentists or small offices would actually have an advertising department. Probably none, like your post seems to suggest since they don't probably do a ton of advertising besides phone books and stuff. Great idea! So that gives me one idea for you: maybe you could create sample phone book ads since that is probably where most of their advertising budget goes. They might be interested in something more exciting or original than looking the same as every other ad in the phone book. Well, good luck.

Yeah new posts! Finally! First of all I didn't know that you did graphic design? Do you have software? We have just been playing around with photoshop this week and trying to figure it out. Anyway I have a random idea if you do that sort of thing... Well on Etsy.com where I have my shop people sell there graphic design services to other etsians. Like I just paid someone to design me a banner for my shop. You can see it at the top here: www.sweetpeababy.etsy.com
I also paid her to design matching business cards and shipping labels.. anyway there is a high demand for it on there if you are interested in selling your services on Etsy... Just a thought call me if you would like to talk more about it. I could give you some tips if you are interested. Otherwise your other idea sounds cool too!

Sounds like a great idea. I was definitely thinking about Etsy also. There aren't that many people on there that do the advertising side but there are a lot of sellers needing advertising help. I don't know if this is in your realm but the graphic design like what Nan was mentioning is especially needed. For example, if you look at my shop you'll see a new logo and banner and avatar, etc. and I paid someone on Etsy to do that for me.

I didn't know you had a blog! How come you never told me? I did freelancing before I got my job, and I was surprised by the great experience and pay I got. I hope it works out!
